Once upon a time, in a bustling town, a baby was discovered nestled in a cardboard box - and that baby was me. At just a week to 10 days old, I was found by the caretaker of The Tally Ho Apartment Building in Wheeling, West Virginia. Early one crisp morning, as the sun began to rise, he stumbled upon the box while preparing for his day. News of my unusual discovery spread quickly, and soon I was known as "The Tally Ho Baby" in the local newspapers, capturing the hearts of many.
Due to this unexpected situation, I became a Ward of the State of West Virginia, which meant that the state would provide care for me for one month, under the hope that my mother would return to reclaim her child. Days turned into weeks, and with each passing moment, the anticipation faded.
As the month drew to a close, a dinner party was held in honor of Judge McKee, a respected figure in the community. Among the guests were a young, prominent attorney named George Bailey and his compassionate wife, Lucretia. During the gathering, curiosity about my fate arose, leading them to approach the Judge with heartfelt concern. “What ever happened to ‘The Tally Ho Baby?’” they inquired. “Did her mother come back to claim her?”
The Judge’s answer was heavy with sorrow: “No, it’s very sad, George. Her mother never returned, so we will ship her to the State Orphanage in Charleston this Monday.”
This news ignited a spark of determination in George and Lucretia. “No, you can't! We’d love to have her. Please let us adopt her!” they implored, their voices filled with urgency and love. And so, on that fateful morning, instead of being transported to the orphanage, Lucretia and George Bailey found themselves in the Judge's chambers, where they embraced the opportunity to adopt “The Tally Ho Baby.” Best of all, they chose to welcome me into their lives SIGHT UNSEEN, forever changing the course of my story with their selflessness and love.
